About four years ago,
during a particularly wet summer, I
went on an early morning hike along
the woods near our cottage. After a short time, the constant attack of
mosquitoes, deer flies and various other flying insects (orthropods) became
so annoying, that I had to cut my nature outing short and return to the
cottage. In spite of wearing heavy clothing up to my neck, my face was covered by insect bites at places where I missed applying DEET.
I decided then and there to
design protective headgear, so I could enjoy nature at leisure without the
scourge of insect bites.
After four years of research and development and
rigorous testing the various designs at the cottage, the Zzz-ero
Bites Headgear was born . Since using this protective headgear during
many hours of walks in the mosquiro-infested countryside, I have managed to enjoy nature directly,
without worrying about the buzzing of millions of flying insects, all wanting to have a taste of my blood.
The headgear, while providing unhampered vision through an optically clear polycarbonate
lens and easy breathing through the
reticulated foam material, allows 100%
protection from the bites of all flying insects so far encountered. The major advantage of
this headgear is that as well as providing full protection against the bites
of anthropods, it completely eliminates the need for chemical bug repellents.
The traditional bug protective headgear, employing a thin
mesh over the head has several
disadvantages. The most serious of
these disadvantages is that wherever the mesh touches the skin, bugs can bite
right through. Another serious
disadvantage of the mesh is the lack of clarity of vision through it.
Personally, I find looking through a mesh fabric, no matter how fine, very
annoying.
Both of these important disadvantages of the mesh have been
addressed by the Zzz-ero Bites headgear.
It is made of ¼” thick reticulated foam, which is actually 96%
air and has been used as an air filter in many household appliances for years. Because the reticulated foam functions as a
three dimentional mesh, it prevents
the flying insects from getting
within biting range of the subject’s skin .
The vision problem of the mesh has been solved in the ZB
headgear by providing an optically clear PC lens in front of the eyes
allowing perfect vision in all directions.
The headgear is also flexible enough to allow eye-glasses to be worn with it without any difficulties or discomfort. Also, the
reticulated foam is acoustically transparent,
allowing the wearer to listen to the sounds of nature with high
fidelity.
In summary, the ZB headgear allows the wearer to experience the
sights, sounds and smells of nature without
chemicals and the danger and annoyance of insect bites.
